College Spending Tip of the Day- Turn Your Old Junk into Somebody Else’s New Junk

For SaleThis will be the first of many college savings Tips of the Day that I will be posting on this blog. These tips will range from very obvious ways to save money, to some obscure ideas I wish I would have utilized back in my college days. Enjoy!

Tip of the day- Whether you are reading this from your dorm, apartment, or parents house, look around at how much “junk” you have accumulated. That “junk” really has no value to you anymore, but it probably has value to somebody else. You can make hundreds of dollars at a time if you coordinate a mass selling of your old items online. There are huge online marketplaces full of people willing to pay you for your “junk”.

Back in college my roommates and I would sell all of our old items at the end of each semester. We would post online everything from t-shirts, guitars, and stereo’s on Craigslist.com and Backpage.com. After all was said and done we could walk away with over $500 in cash. That money would end up being put towards house bills, and of course a small portion would be put into a house party fund.

Give it a shot… post some items when you have a down weekend at school. Remember to watch out for scams and to be careful when you arrange the swapping of items for cash. Only do this in a public place and don’t invite strangers to your house.

    1. This is a good idea. I sold tons of my college stuff after I graduated and it helped relieve some of the initial loan payments and the costs of moving off campus.
